Each of the eight told a short story about a time belonging was one of those two things. Then six of them sorted every story onto one side or the other — including, unavoidably, stories they disagreed with.
8 stories, 6 sorters. The ones everybody read the same way sit at the ends; the ones the group split on sit in the middle, and that middle is the threshold.
